Erstfeld, Switzerland

was found on August 20, 1962, in Erstfeld, Canton of URI, located in central Switzerland, by two Italian workers. The sensational find was under a mighty boulder at a depth of about 9 meters – on the south side of the current dam of the Ribital development.

The gold treasure from Erstfeld is considered to be the most important Swiss Celtic find from around 300 BC. Christ. The four-neck rings and three-arm rings are practically new women’s jewelry made of up to 95% pure gold and weigh a total of 640 grams.

The neck and arm rings discovered in Erstfeld are outstanding masterpieces of Celtic handicrafts. There are only a few comparable valuable finds in Europe north of the Alps.

can be admired as a copy in the Historical Museum URI in Altdorf. The real finds are exhibited in the Swiss National Museum in Zurich.

The gold treasure find is one of the most significant ever made in Switzerland. The masterfully crafted shapes and decorations of enigmatic intertwined creatures – half-animal half-human.

The Discovery

of the Erstfeld Godrings was a sensation. The richly decorated, ornamented jewelry pieces are made of 22-carat gold and are very valuable witnesses to the masterful and fascinating handicrafts of the Celts.

Erstfeld was a border area to the Alps and on the edge of the settlement area of the Celts, who lived in central Switzerland around 300 BC. . Celts made sacrifices to their gods in special places. High mountains – like the Gotthard massif – soared up into the sky to the gods.

Today the gold treasure is interpreted as a dedication to a mountain god. The seven neck bracelets look very similar stylistically and are decorated with very beautiful relief and decorative elements.

Celtic Culture in Switzerland

The new tunnel reduces travel times between Ticino and German-speaking Switzerland. And thanks to fast S-Bahn connections, it turns the southern canton into a “Città Ticino”. But some problems remain unsolved.

The time has come. The official opening of the new Ceneri Base Tunnel will be celebrated this Friday – in view of the coronavirus and the necessary protective measures, however, on a modest scale. The Ceneri Base Tunnel, the New Alpine Transversal (Neat) is completed, construction of the century that took 28 years to complete – the Ceneri 14 years alone – and devoured around 22 billion francs. A flat railway through the Alps, “which, as a contribution to the protection of the Alps, should make an important contribution to shifting freight traffic from road to rail”, as Minister of Transport Sommaruga tirelessly repeated.

For rail customers, travel times between north and south are reduced by around 20 minutes:

A drive from Zurich to Lugano will take just under two hours.

The train ride from Lucerne to Lugano will now take 1 hour and 40 minutes.

A EuroCity train between Zurich and the northern Italian metropolis of Milan now takes 3 hours and 17 minutes.

That is fast, but still a long way from the promises that the Federal Council made on the Neat in the 1992 referendum vote. In the voting booklet at the time, it was said: “The NEAT gives us access to the European transport network of tomorrow. From Zurich, Milan can be reached in a good 2 hours, Paris and Frankfurt in 3 hours, London and Rome in just under 5 1/2 hours. ”

Speeds of up to 250 km / h: the base tunnel in numbers

The Ceneri Base Tunnel runs from Camorino near Bellinzona to Vezia near Lugano. With a length of 15.4 kilometers, the tunnel is the third and third longest tunnel in the New Alpine Transversal (Neat) after the Gotthard (56 km) and Lötschberg Base Tunnels (34.6 km). For safety reasons, as with the Gotthard, two single-track tubes were built for the Ceneri, which led to a massive increase in costs. These are 40 meters apart and are connected to each other every 325 meters by 48 crosscuts. The overburden with mountains in the Ceneri zone is a maximum of 800 meters. The excavated material reached 7.9 million tons. 900 kilometers of copper cable, 10,500 kilometers of fiber optics, and 66.6 kilometers of track were laid.

Cocaine is mainly produced in Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru.

In the large ports in Brazil and Venezuela, the drug cartels bribe port workers who ship the coke in shipping containers to Europe, for example to Antwerp, Rotterdam, or Hamburg. There, in turn, bribed port employees to receive it. The cocaine is resold and reaches the whole of Europe from the port cities. It is known that the drugs are shipped with goods such as bananas. The owners of the containers do not normally know that drugs are smuggled into their containers. However, the cocaine should never have reached the Coop branches. Apparently, the dealers were prevented from getting it out of the banana boxes in time. It is conceivable that the cocaine was not intended for the Swiss market at all, what could be the reason why the coke ended up here anyway?

These drugs are valued at several million Swiss francs, so there must be a valid reason that the dealers did not take the cocaine out of the box. It is possible that the drug dealers could not cross certain national borders due to the corona measures and therefore could not get the drugs in time. The freighters are on the road for several weeks, which makes planning difficult.

Does it happen more often that drug dealers cannot get their substance?

Such safeguards exist every few years. Large quantities of cocaine have also been seized in Germany and Basel. If you consider that between 3.5 and 4 tons of pure cocaine is used on the Swiss cocaine market each year, the 140 kilograms are not particularly important.

How does cocaine usually get to Switzerland from the major European ports?

After the cocaine arrives safely in Europe, it is sold. After that, there are different ways how it can get to Switzerland. It is often couriers who bring the drug here in small quantities, i.e. one to two kilograms, overland or by plane. The cocaine is then distributed to various negotiators.

Why is cocaine no longer confiscated?

In large ports like Rotterdam, several containers are processed every second. It is simply impossible to control them all. As soon as a delivery arrives, the cocaine is usually taken out of the containers and they are given new seals. Then the cocaine is distributed further by land, in trucks or cars. From the moment cocaine reaches Europe safely, it is difficult for the authorities to find and seize it

Driving early in the morning from Switzerland to Lloret de Mar, Spain required that we stayed overnight somewhere in France to break the traveling distance.

After researching the web I came across this quaint,  Bed & Breakfast called Le MAS DE L’OLIVIER, in a small country village called Verargues.

It was named Le Mas De l’Olivier because of the Olive tree in the courtyard.

Verargues has a population of approximately 700 people, is located in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon, District of Montpellier.

Arriving in the late afternoon,

we were let in at the electric gate leading us to the courtyard of the main building.

After the assignment of the rooms, we were 10 people altogether, and that took a bit of time, we enjoyed refreshments in the courtyard, and the kids jumped in the pool to cool off. Dinner was served in the courtyard, start we had a chilled Radish Cream Soup, crusty French bread was served with an Olive-Red Beet Tapenade, the main course was a combination of Tempura Fried Chicken, Roasted Peppers, and Eggplant, with a BBQ’ed Beef Patty.

Not exactly your typical,

traditional French meal, but we were all hungry and enjoyed it. The rooms were clean and comfortable and all had AC!

The Vineyard

next, the hotel is in existence since 1789. Le Mas De l’Olivier consists of 4 buildings with a total capacity of up to 45 people.

The main building houses individual rooms, the other buildings contain 4 Suites, each Suite has its own style and decoration.

In the morning Silvi, the owner,  greeted us with a nice breakfast buffet with homemade jams, Silvi’s bread pudding, cakes, crusty French bread, cheeses, fruits, and beverages.

Should you be in that region during your travels, or plan a vacation in the Montpellier region, I would recommend this cute place, whether it is for a day or a week, you will feel at home here.

Norbert kümmert sich um die Vorderseite des Hauses und Torsten ist der Chefkoch, der die großartigen menus vorbereitet. Wenn Sie mit Ihrem eigenen Boot über den See fahren und direkt vor dem Restaurant anlegen, und hier lunch oder abend essen wollen, ist ausreichend Platz von Bootsanlegestellen vorhanden.

Vom Bahnhof und Schiffshafen

in Flüelen sind es nur 10 Minuten zu Fuß entlang des Sees zum Restaurant. Es gibt keine Parkplätze beim Restaurant, daher muss man zu Fuß gehen, es ist jedoch ein wunderschöner spaziergang  von den ankunftsstellen zum Standort.
Ich habe dort den Vatertag mit meiner 22-köpfigen Familie verbracht. Das Essen war perfekt, gut präsentiert und wurde effizient serviert. Die Menüs bestanden aus einem Holzbrett, die Seiten wurden an das Brett geheftet und mit einem Stück Treibholz aus dem See zusammengehalten, eine großartige Idee!

Auf der Speisekarte

stehen unter anderem Lammfilet-Portweinsauce, Ossobucco über Safran-Risotto, Angus-Lendensteak, Thunfisch-Carpaccio, gebratener Branzino (perfekt zubereitet), gegrillter Tintenfisch, frittierter Zander aus dem See und eine tolle auswahl von Pizzas. Mein Favorit ist die Bruschetta Pizza, ein schöner, knuspriger Boden mit Pesto, Olivenöl, geviertelten Datteltomaten, Rucola und Büffelmozzarella.  Das  Essen ist sehr gut, und die  Drinks auch; so wurden bestimmte Sachen serviert, zum Beispiel der Icetea wurde in einer kleinen Weinkaraffe serviert, der Bananasplit, waren nicht halbierte Bananen sondern in scheiben geschnitten und in einem Glaskrug serviert.  Das Tiramisu wurde individuell in einer schönen quadratischen Keramikschale zubereitet. wir hatten die Burrata mit Avocado, Tomaten, beträufelt mit einem Pesto-Olivenöl…es ist genug für zwei Personen als Vorspeise!
