A place you must visit when visiting Switzerland!

The Bavona Valley, in the Canton of Tessin, Switzerland, is a side valley of the Maggia Valley and is considered the steepest rockiest, and most unusual valley in the entire Alpine region. The slopes that encircle it rise several hundred meters in height and were sculpted by the glaciers millions of years ago that once covered the region. The Bavona Valley is known in Switzerland for its rock houses. These are not buildings made of wood or stone the traditional way, but caves and grottos that were merely buildout by human hands. The rooms consist of solid rock walls, as do the ceilings.
People used these caves as shelters for themselves and their animals: living quarters, cellars, and stables were built under the huge slabs of rock left behind by the glaciers. Until a few decades ago, alpine shepherds lived in these cave dwellings.

The Bavona Valley

joins the Maggia Valley at Bignasco . The Bavona flows through the valley. It rises around 560 meters over a length of 12 kilometers.

The valley is a narrow U-shaped glacial trough valley. The many boulders and stones that litter the valley floor date from the time when the glaciers retreated and from landslides such as that of 1594 at Fontana.

There are twelve hamlets (Terre) on the valley floor, whose inhabitants were called Terrieri. Because there were no roads until 1950 and the intentionally non-existent electricity today, the uniform townscape with the traditional stone houses (so-called rustici ) has been preserved, even if the latter have sometimes lost their original character somewhat through additional decorations such as geraniums and wagon wheels. Electricity connections are forbidden in the valley for reasons of traditional protection, even if this ban is circumvented again and again by the residents in a variety of ways (generators, small turbines, solar cells, car batteries).

The hamlets are called – from south to north – Mondada, Fontana, Alnedo, Sabbione, Ritorto, Foroglio, Roseto, Fontanelada, Faèd, Bolla, Sonlerto and San Carlo (Val Bavona). ^[1] The best-known is Foroglio with the Calnègia waterfall, which, with a height of 108 m, is one of the highest in Ticino. ^[2] Except for San Carlo, the last village in the valley, which belonged to Bignasco, all were part of Cavergno. Together with these two formerly independent municipalities, the whole valley became part of the Municipality of Cevio in 2006. From San Carlo a cable car goes up to the Robiei reservoir of the Maggia power plants, the starting point for tours to the Basòdinoor to the Cristallina hut.

History 

The valley was abandoned around 1500 because of the harsher climate. At the bottom of the valley are the ruins of the village of Prèsa di San Carlo . The inhabitants settled in Cavergno or Bignasco and in the spring they moved back into the valley with their animals to the various altitude levels (tiered economy or transhumance ), where they owned dwellings and stables. In order to cultivate the scarce meadows – seventy percent of the area is unproductive – steep stairways were built in higher areas and hanging meadows (prati pensili) were laid out on large boulders. Stables, cellars, and shelters (splüi) were set up under large fallen boulders.

How to get there

Val Bavona can be reached from Locarno by car or bus in about an hour.

From Bignasco, in good conditions, you can take the 41 km long regional long-distance hiking trail Sentiero Cristallina (signposted as hiking route no. 59) via the Cristallina hut in three stages to Airolo in the Bedretto valley.

The section from Mondada to Foroglio ( Percorso della Transumanza ) is designed as a themed trail with information boards about transhumance .

Shopping in Como

Only an hour and a half from home we find ourselves in Italy by Lake Como, what a fantastic region; it’s been a while since we came to this area, we have been to Milan a few times, which is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours from home, this is our first visit to the city of Como.

I really liked this city, great shops, quaint little bars, and coffee shops everywhere. The Cathedrale was absolutely amazing! I was stunned walking in there, almost a bit ostentatious, but absolutely incredible workmanship.

The weekend market

was about a 3/4 mile long, double-laned, with an astoundingly choice of merchandise.

It seemed like all the locals were shopping for food and supplies for the week, and I can understand why since the prices were a fraction of what we pay in Switzerland. I had two Cappuccinos in one of the side street little cafes, and when asked for the bill the waitress told me “2.50 please” I said  “Excuse me?” she replied, “Two fifty Signore”, two fifty for two Cappuccino? Wow, in Switzerland we pay 4.80 for one!

My friend Franco wanted to buy some shoes for his wife, the shoe store owner told us to look out for Mel Gibson, who was strolling around Como, and George Clooney, who owns now two houses on Lake Como.

I cannot comment on the food, as we only eat some chicken skewers at the market, which were delicious, and then I had a slab of cold pizza in a food court market, they couldn’t heat it for me because another large pizza dominated the oven, so instead of waiting I eat it cold while walking. We then had dinner over the border in Switzerland, on the way back, in the Tessin region, our friend Franco said he knew a little place somewhere above Airolo, very rustic, traditional Ticinese food served, but he hadn’t been back for a couple of years, so we decided to give it a try. It was dark when we arrived in the area, we drove to a small village with very narrow streets to reach this little restaurant, as we walked in we realized it didn’t look anything like rustic anymore, with white table cloths, burgundy glasses on the tables, the place was painted over, it looked brand new. We then were told that a new owner had taken over about two months ago. Therefore the food was not as good as we all expected.

Anyways, we shall go back to Como for further exploration of the surrounding areas, and visit that market again.

WHAT WILL BE BUILT?

The main Tunnel

The main tunnel runs parallel to the first tube at a distance of approx. 70 meters and will also be 16.9 kilometers long. The second tube will be connected to the existing tunnel system. The tunnel cross-section is round and has a diameter of approx. 12.3 meters. The lane in the tunnel, including the emergency lane, will be around 8 meters wide. A total of 68 connecting tunnels are planned at intervals of 250 meters along the entire length of the tunnel. The space above the roadway is available for the ventilation systems and is connected to the existing ventilation shafts.

Two service ducts are provided in the cavity under the roadway. All lines for electricity, communication, and extinguishing water, which are necessary for the maintenance of the tunnel, are installed in a canal. The second channel provides space for third-party infrastructures. For example, the power grid operator Swissgrid: They are replacing their existing high-voltage line over the Gotthard Pass with a new line in the road tunnel. Linking such a line to a road tunnel is a pioneering project across Europe. After commissioning, the old line over the Gotthard Pass will be dismantled.

The Gotthard tunnel between Göschenen, Uri, and Airolo, Ticino, needs extensive renovations and repairs. That would require a full lockdown of the tunnel. So that the north-south connection can be maintained during the renovation, the Federal Roads Office FEDRO will be building a second tunnel tube over the next few years. It is expected to be operational in 2029. Then the repair of the first, existing tube will start. Both tunnels will then be available as of 2032. Only one lane will be open in each direction, so the traffic capacity through the Gotthard will not be increased. 

Delia, the name of the tunnel boring machine, is characterized by the pink color of its “body”. Ten elements with different equipment and installations are attached to the drill head so that the ready-to-use drilling machine has a total length of 175 meters and a total weight of 1,100 tons.

After the start-up phase, Delia will begin drilling through rock in August 2022 to the southern geological fault zone, 4.9 km away, which it is expected to reach in June 2023. With a head diameter of “only” 7.4 meters, Delia is one of two small tunnel-boring machines used on this site. In the main tunnel, two tunnel boring machines with a diameter of 12.3m work.

THE REGION

The construction of the second tube affects the surrounding region, the Urner Oberland and the Leventina Valley. The environmental compatibility of the project has been proven, but there are still unavoidable effects. These are compensated for with appropriate environmental protection measures to upgrade habitats and landscapes in the region.

LAKE DEPOSIT IN LAKE URI

The train transports around 3.5 million tons of rock material from the excavation of the second tube to Flüelen. There it is used for the renaturation of shallow water zones in Lake Uri. In this case, renaturation means the restoration of near-natural habitats and an increase in biological diversity

Im Hohlraum unter der Fahrbahn sind zwei Werkleitungskanäle vorgesehen. In einem Kanal werden alle Leitungen für Strom, Kommunikation und Löschwasser installiert, die für den Unterhalt des Tunnels notwendig sind. Der zweite Kanal bietet Platz für Infrastrukturen von Dritten. Beispielsweise für die Stromnetzbetreiberin Swissgrid: Sie ersetzt ihre bestehende Hochspannungsleitung über den Gotthardpass durch eine neue Leitung im Strassentunnel. Die Verknüpfung einer solchen Leitung mit einem Strassentunnel ist europaweit ein Pionierprojekt. Nach der Inbetriebnahme wird die alte Leitung über den Gotthardpass zurückgebaut.

Der Gotthard-Strassentunnel zwischen Göschenen, Uri, und Airolo, Ticino, braucht eine umfangreiche Instandsetzung. Dafür wäre eine Vollsperrung notwendig. Damit die Nord-Süd-Verbindung während der Sanierung aufrechterhalten werden kann, baut das Bundesamt für Strasse ASTRA in den nächsten Jahren eine zweite Tunnelröhre. Sie ist voraussichtlich ab 2029 in Betrieb. Danach steht die Instandsetzung der ersten Röhre an. Ab 2032 stehen dann beide Tunnel zur Verfügung. Pro Richtung wird stets nur eine Fahrspur offen sein, die Verkehrskapazität durch den Gotthard wird also nicht erhöht.Delia, die Tunnelbohrmaschine, zeichnet sich durch die rosa Farbe ihres «Körpers» aus. Zehn Elemente mit verschiedenen Ausrüstungen und Installationen werden an den Bohrkopf angehängt, so dass die einsatzbereite Bohrmaschine eine Gesamtlänge von 175 Metern und ein Gesamtgewicht von 1’100 Tonnen erreicht.

Eine Stunde später,

Ich sah eine große Libelle, die anmutig Zentimeter über der Wasseroberfläche schwebte, direkt neben den untergetauchten Felsblöcken. Ein Schatten tauchte aus der Tiefe auf. Dann öffnete sich wie in Zeitlupe die Oberfläche, gefolgt von einer massiven Forelle, deren Augen auf das Insekt gerichtet waren und deren mächtiger Schwanz es aus dem Wasser trieb. Es endete alles mit einem riesigen Spritzer, der keine 20 Fuß vor meinen Augen lag. Die Libelle war weg. Ich wusste jetzt, wie man diese Riesenforellen fängt.

Mein Vater ist ein Biologe,

der sich auf Schmetterlinge spezialisiert hat – das Studium von Schmetterlingen und Motten. Er brachte mir in den deutschen Wäldern bei, wo ich aufgewachsen bin, wie man verschiedene Insekten fängt und identifiziert. Während sich eine Libelle als schwer zu fangen erweisen würde, machte ich mich auf die Suche nach Libellenlarven – einer jugendlichen Unterwasserform dessen, was gerade von diesen Forellen gefressen wurde. Ich drehte vorsichtig mehrere kleine, untergetauchte Steine ​​und Rindenstücke um (und legte sie vorsichtig zurück) und sammelte drei Larven.

Meine kompakte Angelrute wurde mit einem Schwimmer ausgestattet, mit dem Sie dem Fisch Ihren Köder in einer festgelegten Tiefe präsentieren können. Es gibt nur sehr wenige Dinge, die lohnender sind, als Ihr eigenes Essen zu fangen oder zu suchen. Die Sonne ging jetzt hinter den Bergen unter und ich verbrachte den Rest des Abends damit, die Reinigung meines Fangs zu dokumentieren, Zwiebeln und Avocados zu hacken und die Episode mit einem köstlichen zu beenden Forellentaco. Das Beste von allem war, dass es nur der erste Tag meiner Rucksackreise war. Als die Dunkelheit hereinbrach, beleuchteten die Sterne den See und die Berge vor mir. Da ich für jede Lichtverschmutzung zu weit entfernt war, konnte ich tief in die Milchstraße sehen. Erschöpft kroch ich in mein Zelt, schlüpfte in meinen Schlafsack, schloss die Augen und wurde durch das sanfte Spritzen von Wasser gegen das Seeufer eingeschlafen. Ich war vollkommen in Frieden. In diesen herausfordernden Zeiten erinnern mich Momente wie diese daran, dass es immer noch eine schöne Welt gibt, die jeden Tag darauf wartet, erkundet zu werden.
