Ah, Switzerland.

The land of majestic mountains, shimmering lakes, chocolate that could make you cry, and trains that run like they were scheduled by Swiss-made atomic clocks. But before you pack your finest hiking boots and a pocket full of francs, let’s pull back the velvet curtain.

Because while Switzerland is beautiful, clean, and organized to the point of obsession… It’s not all fondue and yodels. Here are the most negative things tourists should know before stepping into this Alpine wonderland — or risk finding yourself broke, bored, and bewildered.

💸 1. You’ll Spend a Fortune Just Breathing

Switzerland is expensive. Ludicrously expensive. Want a casual lunch? That’ll be 30 francs. A night in a budget hotel? Maybe 200 francs. Need water at a restaurant? That’s extra. Want a paper bag at the grocery store? Yep, you’ll pay for that too, and you will pay for the Ketchup with your Burger!

Pro tip: Budget generously. Then double it. Then maybe cry a little, or have another drink! 😁

🕰️ 2. Sundays = Apocalypse

Planning to go shopping on Sunday? Cute. You’ll quickly discover that the country collectively takes the day off. Shops, supermarkets, even many restaurants—closed tighter than a Swiss bank vault. You’ll feel like you wandered into a beautifully landscaped ghost town.

Survival tip: Stockpile snacks on Saturday like it’s 1999.

🚫 3. Rules Are Sacred

Switzerland is a rules utopia. No jaywalking. No loud talking on trains. No flushing your toilet after 10 p.m. in some apartment buildings (seriously). And woe betide the tourist who recycles incorrectly. The locals will spot it, and they will judge.

Advice: Don’t rebel. Just quietly conform.

🧊 4. The People Are… Efficiently Distant

The Swiss are polite, reserved, and impressively neutral (see: entire national identity). They won’t bother you, but they probably won’t invite you to their BBQ either. For some, it comes off as cold or aloof; however, don’t be offended, it is as common amongst Swiss families!

Social tip: Don’t take it personally. This isn’t Italy. Just enjoy your personal space and the sound of cowbells.

🥱 5. Nightlife? What Nightlife?

If your ideal vacation includes cocktails at 2 a.m. and dancing till dawn, Switzerland may disappoint. Most bars close early, and clubs, where they exist, are often hard to find and expensive. The country goes to bed early, probably with a mug of herbal tea.

Night owl tip: Pack a book or get into stargazing.

🗣️ 6. Language Roulette

Switzerland has four official languages—German, 62.5%, French, 23%, Italian, 9%, and Romansh, 5.5%. Depending on where you are, the language (and even the flavor of that language) changes. Swiss-German alone can sound like Klingon to standard German speakers. Is English common in cities, but in small towns? Less so.

Communication tip: A few local words go a long way—and Google Translate goes even further.

🛍️ 7. Early Closing Hours Will Break You

Shops close early. Like 6:30 p.m. early. Weekdays, all retail shops close from 12 noon until 2 pm, on Sundays closed all day, miss that window and you’re out of luck. Pharmacies, post offices, and even bakeries keep hours that suggest they moonlight as hobbits.

Planning tip: Be efficient, or be hungry.

🏞️ 8. Nature Is Not a Suggestion

Switzerland lives and breathes the great outdoors. If you don’t enjoy hiking, biking, skiing, or pretending you enjoy hiking, biking, or skiing, you might run out of things to do. Museums and culture exist, but they take a backseat to peaks and pastures.

Reality check: Bring boots or books. Or both.

🚬 9. Smokers Are Still Among Us

Despite its clean image, smoking is still common, especially on café terraces, outside stations, and in certain public areas. If you’re sensitive to smoke, prepare to dodge it like a fog of social awkwardness.

⏱️ 10. Time Is Sacred

Swiss punctuality isn’t a stereotype. It’s a moral code. Trains leave on the dot, and being late (even by a few minutes) is a crime against society. Don’t keep a Swiss person waiting.

Pro tip: Set your watch. Then set your soul to “on time.”

Final Thoughts

Switzerland may be stunning, but she’s not trying to be your cheap, wild, spontaneous best friend. She’s the elegant, rules-loving, expensive aunt with impeccable taste and no time for nonsense. Respect her ways, budget wisely, and plan like a Swiss train conductor, and you’ll be rewarded with jaw-dropping scenery, world-class cheese, and a sense of peace only slightly undermined by the price of lunch.

Switzerland is beautiful, clean, organized, and expensive, but as we all know, beauty costs money!
The post Switzerland: The Dark Side of Paradise (Tourist Survival Guide) first appeared on Food, Travel, and Stories from a Swiss Chef Who Cooked Around the World .

Welcome to Switzerland, a place so stunning it looks like it was Photoshopped by Mother Nature herself. Known for its punctual trains, mouthwatering chocolate, and mountains that practically beg for a photo shoot, this little Alpine paradise is the ultimate bucket-list destination. But before you pack your hiking boots and an empty suitcase for cheese, here are some things you need to know—served with a side of humor and a sprinkle of data.

1. Scenic Splendor (And the Price for It)

Switzerland isn’t just scenic—it’s offensively beautiful. Take the Matterhorn, for example. It’s the supermodel of mountains, posing for Toblerone bars (not for long anymore) and making every other peak feel inadequate. Then there’s Lake Geneva, which looks more like a desktop wallpaper than an actual place, or Lake Zurich, a long banana-shaped Lake, 24.8 miles long!

But beware: beauty like this comes at a price. As I say to my friends and visitors; beauty costs money! A cup of coffee in Zurich can cost you $5.50—so, sip slowly, there are no refills here. Boy, do I miss that from the US, that brewed cup of coffee, with refills! The irony? The views are free, and they’re the best part. Who needs caffeine when you’ve got alpine air and a postcard-worthy backdrop?

2. Chocolate and Cheese: The Swiss Food Pyramid

Switzerland doesn’t just make chocolate; it perfects it. With the average Swiss citizen consuming 11 kg of chocolate a year, it’s practically a national sport. You’ll find every kind imaginable, from the classic Lindt balls to boutique truffles, to the Läderach stores with their slabs of chocolates, that cost as much as your rent.

Then there’s the cheese. Fondue isn’t just food here; it’s a social event. Gather your friends, dip bread into molten cheese, and try not to drop it—because if you do, Swiss tradition says you owe everyone a round of drinks or a glass of wine. You may also want to try “Raclette”, the french term for Scarpping or Squeegeeing, with this version you melt your slice of flavored or seasoned cheese, then scrap it over boiled potatoes, a pinch of fresh black pepper, cornichons, et voila! it might be a bit lighter on your stomach, verses all that bread soaked up with cheese, unless, of course, you are willing to take a couple of shots of Cherry Brandy after the cheese fondue, in order to break up that lump of cheese in your stomach!

3. Swiss Trains: Punctual to a Fault

If Swiss trains were a person, they’d be the friend who shows up to dinner at 6:59 for a 7:00 reservation. The Swiss rail network is so efficient that you’ll start questioning why the rest of the world hasn’t caught on. With over 300 million passengers using Swiss trains annually, they’re practically the veins of the nation. With 29,000 km of railroad tracks in the country, one can only be amazed and impressed with the timeliness of the connections.

Miss one? Don’t worry; there’ll be another in exactly 7 minutes, or the case scenario, another within the hour. Or as the locals call it, “a lifetime.” Pro tip: get a Swiss Travel Pass—a golden ticket to this punctual paradise. It’s good for all trains, buses, ferries, some gondolas, admission to 500 museums, mountain excursions, etc.

4. Languages: Four Official Ones and Everyone Speaks Better English Than You

Switzerland has four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Raeto-Romansh. Yes, Raeto-Romansh is a thing, and no, it’s not a Game of Thrones dialect, it’s the fourth national language of Switzerland, about 60,000 people speak it in the east part of Switzerland, the Chur, Grison area. It is a mixture of French, Italian, and German, it sounds like Latin.

The four languages are divided into 63% German and Swiss German, 28% French, 8% Italian and 1% Raeto-Romansh

And here’s the kicker: most Swiss people speak better English than your high school English teacher. So, don’t stress about the language barrier—stress about pronouncing Chur correctly. (It’s “Koor,” by the way.

5. Quirky Swiss Laws and Traditions

Switzerland takes “quirky” to a whole new level. Did you know it’s illegal to own just one guinea pig? Turns out, they get lonely, and Swiss law won’t stand for that kind of emotional neglect.

Since Switzerland is predominantly Roman Catholic, there are a lot of churches and chapels, get used to being woken up 7 days a week by church bells through their concert at 6 am sharp!

Then there’s the tradition of ringing cowbells during festivals, and possibly in the vicinity of your hotel or Airbnb. These aren’t your average jingle bells—these are hand-painted, oversized masterpieces that weigh more than a small child. Even the cows here live better than most of us.

And if you are thinking of partying all nite, think again, 10 pm is lights out here!

Conclusion: Pack Your Bags (and Your Sense of Humor)

Switzerland isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience. From its jaw-dropping landscapes to its perfectly engineered trains, every moment feels like stepping into a postcard. Just remember to budget wisely, brush up on your fondue and raclette etiquette, and prepare to fall in love with a country that’s as charming as it is efficient.

Oh, and one last tip: try not to envy the cows too much—they’ve earned it.)

Stay safe and well

Restaurant “Lucide” Lucerne

The translation or meaning of the name of this restaurant indeed becomes very clear the minute you walk through the front door!
The view from our table was fascinating, the local fair was located around the Cultural Center in Lucerne, Switzerland, in which Lucide is situated on the first floor, it was entertaining for us to watch the crowds, the rides, and the flashing lights, while we were enjoying our chat over cocktails.
Karl Bucher’s Interior Design created a stunning modern, eclectic look, the lighting consists of Willow Lamp Chandeliers, the custom made five meters long Chesterfield Sofa, the tangerine-colored velvet dining chairs, and the beautiful brass panels on the walls, are just a few of the items that created a perfect mixture between a French Bistro and an Art Deco Cafe.
The open kitchen with a large chef’s table in front of it was my favorite, even though we were sitting on the side of the open kitchen, we were able to watch the crew doing their coordinated dance moves in the kitchen through the reflection of the opposite window.
Our waitress Michele was great, she brought us some kind of homemade pretzel and a light aioli with our cocktails, and the rest of our meal was amazing! Perfect combinations, incredible flavors, and textures, perfectly seasoned and presented.

Our four-course menu consisted of Raviolo, filled with hand-pulled lamb, and finely shredded Parsnip laying in a vegetable broth, the other item was Pulpo, sous vide cooked, with horseradish foam, beans, and pistachio.
The second course was pan-seared halibut, over grilled cauliflower on the bottom, steamed and lightly pickled on top, with tarragon foam, and lime.

The main courses were, roasted Deer Loin with a delicately rolled herb omelet, Brussel sprouts, chanterelle mushrooms, piedmont hazelnut mousse, and a rich red wine reduction sauce, the other main course was a Piedmont beef sirloin, dramatic, red and savoy cabbage, and king oyster mushrooms.

For dessert we had stewed plums with curd cheese mousse and almond croquants, the other one was a specialty from the eastern part of Switzerland called “schlorizfladen”, a puff pastry base with dehydrated pear marmalade, topped with a warm egg custard served with a local, double cream piece of cheese, similar to a rich, creamy brie.

I congratulate Michele Meier and her team for a great dining experience! They certainly deserve the 16 GaultMillau points!

As always, I shall not write anything negative about any establishment, if I have nothing good to tell I won’t write about it, I just won’t go back to the establishment. If I made mistakes describing any dishes, I apologize, please correct me, I am writing and commenting as I remember enjoying the meal.

Through our English-speaking chat on Whatsapp, I found out about the new owners of this great spot located between Altdorf and Flüelen in the Canton of URI. My wife Nazarine is British and we live in the area for the past 8 years, so when I mentioned Scones, Fish&Chips, and Beef’n Ale Pie to my wife she got all excited! It reminded both of us of our visit to Lyme Regis, Dorset, where we ate Scones and Fish & Chips all day long!😁

This mountain guesthouse is owned and operated by Gaby & Andy Brownrigg, Andy is British and Gaby is a native from the Central Switzerland region. They are not new to the gastro scene, they operated a restaurant in the Grison area of Switzerland for several years, then in 2018, they decided to take over Eggberge. They renovated it in a sustainable way such as an energy-efficient new kitchen and Minergi insulated windows.

The Ceneri tunnel is opened, the work of the century is completed

The new tunnel reduces travel times between Ticino and German-speaking Switzerland. And thanks to fast S-Bahn connections, it turns the southern canton into a “Città Ticino”. But some problems remain unsolved.

The time has come. The official opening of the new Ceneri Base Tunnel will be celebrated this Friday – in view of the coronavirus and the necessary protective measures, however, on a modest scale. Only a few dozen of the originally 650 invited guests will be there. Federal President Simonetta Sommaruga, Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis, and others will officially hand over the tunnel to the operator SBB. Commissioning will follow in December with the changeover to the 2021 timetable.

The Ceneri Base Tunnel, the New Alpine Transversal (Neat) is completed, construction of the century that took 28 years to complete – the Ceneri 14 years alone – and devoured around 22 billion francs. A flat railway through the Alps, “which, as a contribution to the protection of the Alps, should make an important contribution to shifting freight traffic from road to rail”, as Minister of Transport Sommaruga tirelessly repeated.

For rail customers, travel times between north and south are reduced by around 20 minutes:

A drive from Zurich to Lugano will take just under two hours.

The train ride from Lucerne to Lugano will now take 1 hour and 40 minutes.

A EuroCity train between Zurich and the northern Italian metropolis of Milan now takes 3 hours and 17 minutes.

That is fast, but still a long way from the promises that the Federal Council made on the Neat in the 1992 referendum vote. In the voting booklet at the time, it was said: “The NEAT gives us access to the European transport network of tomorrow. From Zurich, Milan can be reached in a good 2 hours, Paris and Frankfurt in 3 hours, London and Rome in just under 5 1/2 hours. ”

Miners celebrating the major breakthrough in 2016

Speeds of up to 250 km / h: the base tunnel in numbers

The Ceneri Base Tunnel runs from Camorino near Bellinzona to Vezia near Lugano. With a length of 15.4 kilometers, the tunnel is the third and third longest tunnel in the New Alpine Transversal (Neat) after the Gotthard (56 km) and Lötschberg Base Tunnels (34.6 km). For safety reasons, as with the Gotthard, two single-track tubes were built for the Ceneri, which led to a massive increase in costs. These are 40 meters apart and are connected to each other every 325 meters by 48 crosscuts. The overburden with mountains in the Ceneri zone is a maximum of 800 meters. The excavated material reached 7.9 million tons. 900 kilometers of copper cable, 10,500 kilometers of fiber optics, and 66.6 kilometers of track were laid.
