A World of Flavors: Exploring Food Styles with a Dash of Humor

They say food is the universal language, but let’s be real—how you say “delicious” might not matter as much as how you chew it. From chopsticks to bread-breaking, food styles around the globe are as diverse as the people who enjoy them. So grab a fork (or don’t, depending on where you’re eating), and let’s take a bite out of the world’s culinary delights.

Asia: Bold Flavors and Chopstick Acrobatics

Food Globe

Check your travel plans here, before you decide!

Asia doesn’t do bland. From the heat of Thai chili to the umami of Japanese miso, this continent knows how to wake up your taste buds. Communal dining is the norm—because nothing says love like fighting over the last dumpling. Mastering chopsticks is a rite of passage, but don’t worry; no one’s judging your forked attempt at eating sushi. (Okay, maybe a little.) If you are in Italy, go to Verona and visit the Japanese Restaurant “Mood”, a great concept and great food!

The Mediterranean: Olive Oil and Eternal Summers

In the Mediterranean, food isn’t just sustenance—it’s a lifestyle. Think fresh produce, grilled meats, and a suspicious amount of olive oil. (Seriously, they put it on everything.) Italians taught us that carbs are love; Greeks showed us how to stuff everything into a vine leaf, and Spaniards introduced tapas—a way to make dinner last six hours.

Africa: Spice, Soul, and Sharing

African Food

African cuisine brings the heat—both in flavor and in its love for communal eating. Whether it’s a Moroccan tagine, Ethiopian injera (flatbread that doubles as cutlery), or Nigerian jollof rice (a dish so iconic it started international debates), this continent proves food is best enjoyed with company. Pro tip: come hungry and bring your hands—they’re often the preferred utensil.

Latin America: Spice, Street Food, and Siestas

Latin America knows how to party, and the food is the VIP guest. From tacos in Mexico to empanadas in Argentina, this is a region where street food reigns supreme. Every dish has a personality—bold, vibrant, and unapologetically spicy. Don’t forget to wash it all down with a good old piña colada or some tequila. Salud!

Europe: Where Elegance Meets Hearty Meals

Europe is the overachiever of food. The French make art with their butter-laden pastries, Italians romanticize pasta, and Germans? They bring you sausage and beer—practicality at its finest. Then there’s the Swiss, who melted cheese and called it dinner (fondue, we love you). Each country has its culinary quirks, and every single one is worth savoring.

North America: Fusion Frenzy and Comfort Food Galore

World Cuisine

North America isn’t so much a cuisine as it is a giant melting pot—literally. Burgers, Tex-Mex, poutine, and bagels are just the tip of the iceberg. Here, portion sizes defy logic, and “fusion food” is practically a genre. Maple syrup is life in Canada, while the U.S. perfected the art of putting bacon on everything.

Street Food: The World’s Snack Bar

There’s no better way to taste a city than through its street food. Whether it’s samosas in India, hot dogs in New York, or takoyaki in Japan, these portable delights prove great things come in small packages (wrapped in grease-stained paper). Bonus: they’re usually cheap, so you can try one of everything.

Fine Dining: When Food Becomes Art

At the other end of the spectrum, we have fine dining, where the plates are small, but the prices are big. Expect foam, edible flowers, and a waiter explaining your dish like it’s the climax of a Shakespearean play. Sure, you might leave hungry, but hey, you’ll get a great Instagram photo.

Comfort Food: Universal Warm Hugs

Every culture has its version of comfort food. The Italians have lasagna, the Japanese have ramen, and the Americans have mac and cheese. It’s the culinary equivalent of a cozy blanket on a cold day—proof that no matter where you are, food is the ultimate source of comfort.

Final Bite

The world is a buffet, and we’re just lucky to be living in it. Whether you’re slurping pho in Vietnam, indulging in gelato in Italy, munching on tacos in Mexico, or cheese fondue in Switzerland, food is a celebration of life. So go out, explore, and don’t be afraid to get a little messy. (Just maybe practice your chopstick skills before heading to Asia.)😆

The future of gastronomy is an exciting blend of tradition, innovation, and responsibility. As the world evolves, so too does our approach to food, dining, and culinary experiences. Here are the key trends shaping the future of gastronomy:

1. Sustainable and Ethical Dining

Farm-to-table movement: Restaurants are sourcing ingredients locally and seasonally to reduce their carbon footprint.

Zero-waste kitchens: Chefs are creatively repurposing scraps to minimize food waste.

Alternative proteins: Expect to see more plant-based options, lab-grown meats, and insect-based foods on menus, catering to both ethical and environmental concerns.

Ocean-friendly practices: Sustainable seafood, such as responsibly farmed fish and invasive species, will dominate seafood offerings.

Manufacturers of Food: Producers and manufacturers should be forbidden from discarding surplus foods, and inventories

2. Technology Meets the Table

Smart kitchens: AI and automation will streamline prep and cooking, reducing errors and increasing efficiency.

Virtual dining experiences: Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) will offer immersive dining adventures, blending food with storytelling.

Personalized nutrition: Wearables and apps will guide diners to meals tailored to their health goals, dietary needs, or even DNA profiles.

Robots and drones: From robotic chefs to drone-delivered food, the future of convenience dining is high-tech.

The New Futuristic Chefs

3. Culinary Diversity and Fusion

Global flavors: Diners are increasingly adventurous, driving demand for fusion cuisines and lesser-known regional dishes.

Cultural preservation: At the same time, there’s a growing focus on safeguarding culinary heritage, ensuring traditional recipes and techniques are passed down.

Food diplomacy: Gastronomy will continue to serve as a bridge between cultures, fostering understanding and collaboration.

4. Elevated Experiential Dining

Interactive dining: Guests might cook parts of their meals or be involved in the creative process.

Theatrical elements: Multi-sensory experiences that combine sound, visuals, and storytelling with food.

Unique venues: Think underwater restaurants, treehouse dining, meals in historical ruins, or World War Two revived bunkers as in Switzerland

5. Health and Wellness Focus

Functional foods: Dishes that include probiotics, adaptogens, and other health-boosting ingredients.

Mindful eating: Slow dining experiences that encourage guests to savor every bite.

Diet inclusivity: Menus will increasingly cater to vegan, gluten-free, keto, and allergen-free preferences.

6. Climate Change and Food Security Challenges

Urban farming: Vertical gardens and hydroponic systems will become common in city restaurants, reducing the need for transportation and enabling fresher produce.

Resilient ingredients: Drought-resistant grains, climate-adapted crops, and indigenous foods will gain popularity.

Alternative resources: Chefs will innovate with ingredients like seaweed, algae, or synthetic fats.

7. AI-Driven Creativity

Artificial intelligence will assist chefs in developing recipes, balancing flavors, and even predicting food trends. AI sommeliers might recommend pairings based on mood or occasion, enhancing the dining experience.

What Does This Mean for Diners?

In the future, gastronomy won’t just be about eating; it will be a holistic experience connecting people to culture, the planet, and technology. Dining will be smarter, more sustainable, and deeply personal, whether at a Michelin-starred restaurant or via your favorite food delivery app.

The key to success will lie in embracing innovation without losing sight of the soul of cooking: connecting people over a shared love for food. Eat more Cheese Fondue and Raclette!!
How did the avocado get its bad reputation?

If you compare the avocado to other fruits and vegetables it doesn’t look that drastic.

What’s good in this fruit?

The qualities of the avocado are undisputed: high nutritional value, lots of protein, fiber, and vitamins, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Aztecs, who cultivated the fruit more than 10,000 years ago in the Guatemalan-Mexican border area, called it “ahuacatl”, in English: testicles, because of its shape.

How much do we eat?

The avocado is considered a trend fruit that has become popular in Europe and worldwide with the vegetarian and vegan lifestyle. The numbers are impressive: After 2000, 3700 tons were imported into Switzerland alone, in 2010 6000 and in 2021 more than 19000 tons. Last year, Migros, a Swiss supermarket chaine, imported 7,461 tons or 24,698,532 pieces.

How much water does she swallow?

It takes around 600 liters of water to produce one kilogram of avocados. Is that much? Basically yes. At least if fruit comes from a dry country. But in a liter-per-kilogram comparison, it no longer looks so drastic. Some examples: 790 liters of water for a kilo of bananas, 800 for apples; 15,000 liters for beef, and 17,000 liters for chocolate.

What is the impact of transport on the climate?

If you measure the influence on climate and the environment, the focus is primarily on production. Any transportation is negligible as long as it is not by plane – which is hardly the case with avocados. Interesting: Ship transport is 20 to 30 times more efficient than road transport. Avocados from overseas are no worse for the climate than those from Spain or Portugal, on the contrary.

So, spread butter or avocado on your bread?

Smearing avocado on toast is 3x better than butter in terms of environmental and climate issues. In order to cover a third of the daily requirement of a person, 1384 grams of CO2 are produced with butter and only 457 grams with an avocado.

We all know moldy spots on the food. But what do you do about it? Trim the infected areas, throw everything away, or keep eating? The answers to the most pressing questions are below.

How dangerous is mold?

Small amounts of mold do not necessarily have to lead to complaints. However, larger amounts and frequent ingestion must be avoided at all costs. Some types of mold can form mycotoxins. Even small amounts of these toxic substances can be harmful to health and cause vomiting, diarrhea, further damage to the skin and mucous membranes, impairment of the immune and nervous system, and damage to the liver and kidneys. Chronic consequences can even be cancer and genetic damage. The consequences depend on the type of toxins, the amount ingested, and the health of the person.

Can you cut away moldy spots on bread?

No, if there are mold spots on the loaf or on individual slices, the entire bread should be thrown away. Mold can spread quickly in bread, even if you cannot see it. Important: Do not store bread in a plastic bag, as moisture quickly forms here. It is best to store it in a paper sack from the baker or in a bread box. Clean it once a week: first, remove the crumbs, then wipe the box with vinegar water. For longer shelf life, you can cut bread into slices immediately after buying it and freeze it.

Grain and flour should also be stored in a cool, dry place and shaken from time to time. Throw away moldy grains or muesli right away.

Can heat kill mycotoxins?

No, they are heat-resistant and are usually not destroyed during food processing and by high temperatures such as cooking, baking, or frying. Even acidification, drying, or freezing cannot remove them, according to the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office.

Can you skim off mold from yogurt and jam?

No, the entire glass or mug should be thrown away. The more liquid foods are, the faster mold can spread. Moldy foods such as jam, juice, milk, yogurt, quark, or fruit should therefore always be thrown away immediately.

Why does injured fruit go moldy faster than healthy fruit?

Fungal spores, tiny germ cells of mold in the air, get into the fruit particularly easily through injured peel or skin, and thanks to good conditions fungi can deposit, multiply, and spread there. Therefore, buy fruit as fresh as possible and enjoy it without bruises or injuries. Moldy fruit should never be eaten. Cutting away is not enough, as mold can also spread invisibly. Moldy fruits are also not suitable for making compote, fruit juice, or jam.

How does mold get into food?

Mold can get into food in the field, during storage, transport, processing, or even at home. The fungi not only grow on the surface but can penetrate deep into the product and distribute themselves in it. In the case of a so-called “carry over”, long mycotoxins from the feed of farm animals even find their way directly into animal food and are deposited in the meat and in the organs. Milk and eggs can also be affected.

What about mold on cheese and sausage?

Some molds are used deliberately and in a controlled manner in the manufacture of food. Examples are air-dried sausages or cheeses such as Camembert and Roquefort. These cultures are not harmful. Other moldy sausages and cheese should definitely be thrown away, with the exception of parmesan and air-dried whole sausages (such as salami) with a small, superficial mold. Due to the high salt content and the small amount of water, mold cannot spread here as quickly. That’s why you just cut away the affected areas. In case of doubt, however, you should refrain from consuming the food. And mold-ripened cheeses should not be stored together with other types of cheeses.

How can you prevent mold?

Groceries should be bought fresh and consumed quickly. Store the food at home in a clean, cool, and dry place, and pay attention to hygiene in the kitchen and refrigerator. Dispose of moldy food immediately.
The post What to do with mold on your food? first appeared on Food, Travel, and Stories from a Swiss Chef Who Cooked Around the World .

He started as a traveling salesman at 13, selling soap for his father’s company. He had a series of sales jobs, one of which gave chewing gum as a premium. Customers liked the gum better than the product he was trying to sell, so he soon marketed his gum. Juicy Fruit in 1893, and later that year Wrigley’s Spearmint. An advertising genius, his company became the largest chewing gum manufacturer in the world. Mars, the chocolate bar company, owns Wrigley 100% after Warren Buffet sold his interest in Mars, for Mars to have full control over Wrigley

In Deutsch

Fermentation converts the simple sugars in the grains and barley into alcohol. People have been brewing beer for around 6,000 years. It is thought the Sumerians discovered the fermentation process, perhaps when a piece of bread or grain became wet and began to ferment.

The oldest written recipe in the world,

recorded 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia, is for beer. The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates recommended beer as a Greek tranquilizer. Today, the average American or Swiss adult drinks 21.7 to 23 gallons of beer each year. In Switzerland, between registered, unregistered, and private, there are 8000 breweries for a population of 8 million.
