Let me introduce you to the Gotthard region—a slice of Switzerland that’s part historic marvel, natural wonder, and part workout disguised as a vacation. Nestled in the Alps, it’s where glaciers whisper their ancient secrets, tunnels defy physics, and goats shamelessly steal your snacks.

I came here looking for adventure, a touch of history, and maybe an Instagram-worthy selfie. What I found was blisters, stories I’ll be telling for years, and an alarming respect for Swiss cheese.

Act I: The Devil’s in the Details

The Gotthard Pass has been Europe’s main artery for centuries. Merchants, pilgrims, and armies slogged through this treacherous route, driven by ambition and a deep mistrust of Google Maps. At the center of it all is the Devil’s Bridge, a structure so legendary it comes with its own infernal backstory.

The legend goes like this: the villagers needed a bridge but lacked the know-how. So naturally, they called in the Devil. He agreed to build it but demanded the first soul to cross as payment. Clever villagers sent a goat instead. The Devil, not a fan of loopholes, hurled a boulder in fury. (Frankly, I’d have just demanded my consulting fee.)

Standing on the bridge, I marveled at its timeless design and the fact that it hadn’t been renamed “Goat Memorial Bridge.” History is weird like that.

Act II: Nature’s Gym Membership

If the Gotthard Pass is the region’s historical heart, its trails are the lungs. Lungs that you’ll need in excellent shape, by the way, because every hike here feels like a fitness test disguised as a scenic stroll.

Take my trek to Lake Lucendro. The guidebook called it a “moderate hike,” which I quickly realized was Swiss for “you might survive, but don’t count on it.” As I trudged uphill, wheezing like an old accordion, I questioned every life choice that led me to this point.

But then—oh, the payoff! The lake appeared, shimmering like a jewel cradled by rugged peaks. I collapsed on a rock, ate a sandwich, and tried to look contemplative for a photo while secretly hoping my legs wouldn’t mutiny on the way down.

Of course, the wildlife here doesn’t care about your existential crises. Marmots chirped at me like gossiping neighbors, by the way. They make a great muscle & joint pain relieving ointment with the fat of the marmots) and ibexes surveyed my sweaty form with unearned superiority. And then there was the goat—a bold creature with no respect for personal space or property rights. After a tense negotiation involving my granola bar, we parted ways. I’m pretty sure he won.

Act III: Culture Shock (But in a Good Way)

Gotthard culture is a delightful mix of German precision, Italian flair, and Romansh mystery, all wrapped in a blanket of Alpine charm. And nowhere is this more evident than in the food.

In a tiny village inn, I was introduced to the holy trinity of Swiss cuisine: bread, cheese, and stories. The locals served up fondue with a side of folklore, including a tale about the Tschäggättä—mysterious Alpine spirits that roam the valleys in winter. Supposedly, they scare off evil spirits and the occasional tourist who overstays their welcome.

I also tried a local specialty, famous in the canton of Uri, the canton where you either start your journey through the Gotthard or end up starting from the Tessin, the Italian part of Switzerland.

The fondue itself was a revelation. Molten cheese, crusty bread, and the unspoken rule that dropping your bread into the pot meant you’d either sing or pay for everyone’s drinks. I didn’t drop my bread, but I may have sung anyway. The yodeling lesson didn’t hurt either.

Conclusion

The Gotthard region is many things: a gateway to history, a playground for nature lovers, and a test of your cardiovascular endurance. It’s where you can stand on a bridge built by (allegedly) Satan, share your lunch with an overly enthusiastic goat, and end your day with cheese-induced euphoria.

As I boarded the train home, sore but happy, I couldn’t help but smile. The Gotthard isn’t just a place you visit; it’s a place that visits you back—in the form of stories, laughter, and the occasional phantom muscle cramp.

So, pack your boots, bring your appetite, and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime. And maybe keep an extra granola bar handy. You never know when you’ll meet a hungry goat.

1. Scenic Splendor (And the Price for It)

Switzerland isn’t just scenic—it’s offensively beautiful. Take the Matterhorn, for example. It’s the supermodel of mountains, posing for Toblerone bars (not for long anymore) and making every other peak feel inadequate. Then there’s Lake Geneva, which looks more like a desktop wallpaper than an actual place, or Lake Zurich, a long banana-shaped Lake, 24.8 miles long!

But beware: beauty like this comes at a price. As I say to my friends and visitors; beauty costs money! A cup of coffee in Zurich can cost you $5.50—so, sip slowly, there are no refills here. Boy, do I miss that from the US, that brewed cup of coffee, with refills! The irony? The views are free, and they’re the best part. Who needs caffeine when you’ve got alpine air and a postcard-worthy backdrop?

2. Chocolate and Cheese: The Swiss Food Pyramid

Switzerland doesn’t just make chocolate; it perfects it. With the average Swiss citizen consuming 11 kg of chocolate a year, it’s practically a national sport. You’ll find every kind imaginable, from the classic Lindt balls to boutique truffles, to the Läderach stores with their slabs of chocolates, that cost as much as your rent.

Then there’s the cheese. Fondue isn’t just food here; it’s a social event. Gather your friends, dip bread into molten cheese, and try not to drop it—because if you do, Swiss tradition says you owe everyone a round of drinks or a glass of wine. You may also want to try “Raclette”, the french term for Scarpping or Squeegeeing, with this version you melt your slice of flavored or seasoned cheese, then scrap it over boiled potatoes, a pinch of fresh black pepper, cornichons, et voila! it might be a bit lighter on your stomach, verses all that bread soaked up with cheese, unless, of course, you are willing to take a couple of shots of Cherry Brandy after the cheese fondue, in order to break up that lump of cheese in your stomach!

3. Swiss Trains: Punctual to a Fault

If Swiss trains were a person, they’d be the friend who shows up to dinner at 6:59 for a 7:00 reservation. The Swiss rail network is so efficient that you’ll start questioning why the rest of the world hasn’t caught on. With over 300 million passengers using Swiss trains annually, they’re practically the veins of the nation. With 29,000 km of railroad tracks in the country, one can only be amazed and impressed with the timeliness of the connections.

Miss one? Don’t worry; there’ll be another in exactly 7 minutes, or the case scenario, another within the hour. Or as the locals call it, “a lifetime.” Pro tip: get a Swiss Travel Pass—a golden ticket to this punctual paradise. It’s good for all trains, buses, ferries, some gondolas, admission to 500 museums, mountain excursions, etc.

4. Languages: Four Official Ones and Everyone Speaks Better English Than You

Switzerland has four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Raeto-Romansh. Yes, Raeto-Romansh is a thing, and no, it’s not a Game of Thrones dialect, it’s the fourth national language of Switzerland, about 60,000 people speak it in the east part of Switzerland, the Chur, Grison area. It is a mixture of French, Italian, and German, it sounds like  Latin.

And here’s the kicker: most Swiss people speak better English than your high school English teacher. So, don’t stress about the language barrier—stress about pronouncing Chur correctly. (It’s “Koor,” by the way.

5. Quirky Swiss Laws and Traditions

Switzerland takes “quirky” to a whole new level. Did you know it’s illegal to own just one guinea pig? Turns out, they get lonely, and Swiss law won’t stand for that kind of emotional neglect.

Since Switzerland is predominantly Roman Catholic, there are a lot of churches and chapels, get used to being woken up 7 days a week by church bells through their concert at 6 am sharp!

Then there’s the tradition of ringing cowbells during festivals, and possibly in the vicinity of your hotel or Airbnb. These aren’t your average jingle bells—these are hand-painted, oversized masterpieces that weigh more than a small child. Even the cows here live better than most of us.

And if you are thinking of partying all nite, think again, 10 pm is lights out here!

Ich war so leicht wie möglich unterwegs – in meinem Rucksack befanden sich mein Zelt ohne Stangen, mein Schlafsack, mein Butanofen, mein Wasseraufbereiter, mein Erste-Hilfe-Kasten, meine Angelrute und -rolle, Köder und verschiedene andere Dinge. Meine Videogeräte – fünf Kameras, Batterien, Stative und ein Solarladegerät – müssen das Gewicht jedoch auf etwa 60 Pfund gebracht haben. „Wir sehen uns in vier Tagen“, murmelte ich zu meinem Van, bevor ich im Wald verschwand.

Eine Stunde später,

Ich sah eine große Libelle, die anmutig Zentimeter über der Wasseroberfläche schwebte, direkt neben den untergetauchten Felsblöcken. Ein Schatten tauchte aus der Tiefe auf. Dann öffnete sich wie in Zeitlupe die Oberfläche, gefolgt von einer massiven Forelle, deren Augen auf das Insekt gerichtet waren und deren mächtiger Schwanz es aus dem Wasser trieb. Es endete alles mit einem riesigen Spritzer, der keine 20 Fuß vor meinen Augen lag. Die Libelle war weg. Ich wusste jetzt, wie man diese Riesenforellen fängt.

Mein Vater ist ein Biologe,

der sich auf Schmetterlinge spezialisiert hat – das Studium von Schmetterlingen und Motten. Er brachte mir in den deutschen Wäldern bei, wo ich aufgewachsen bin, wie man verschiedene Insekten fängt und identifiziert. Während sich eine Libelle als schwer zu fangen erweisen würde, machte ich mich auf die Suche nach Libellenlarven – einer jugendlichen Unterwasserform dessen, was gerade von diesen Forellen gefressen wurde. Ich drehte vorsichtig mehrere kleine, untergetauchte Steine ​​und Rindenstücke um (und legte sie vorsichtig zurück) und sammelte drei Larven.

Meine kompakte Angelrute wurde mit einem Schwimmer ausgestattet, mit dem Sie dem Fisch Ihren Köder in einer festgelegten Tiefe präsentieren können. Es gibt nur sehr wenige Dinge, die lohnender sind, als Ihr eigenes Essen zu fangen oder zu suchen. Die Sonne ging jetzt hinter den Bergen unter und ich verbrachte den Rest des Abends damit, die Reinigung meines Fangs zu dokumentieren, Zwiebeln und Avocados zu hacken und die Episode mit einem köstlichen zu beenden Forellentaco. Das Beste von allem war, dass es nur der erste Tag meiner Rucksackreise war. Erschöpft kroch ich in mein Zelt, schlüpfte in meinen Schlafsack, schloss die Augen und wurde durch das sanfte Spritzen von Wasser gegen das Seeufer eingeschlafen. Ich war vollkommen in Frieden. In diesen herausfordernden Zeiten erinnern mich Momente wie diese daran, dass es immer noch eine schöne Welt gibt, die jeden Tag darauf wartet, erkundet zu werden.
