The hype about plant-based foods

I get it! All this talk about plant-based foods & diets is uninteresting, especially if you are used to devouring hamburgers, steak, stews, and hot dogs all your life, and  “you are still alive!” despite all the talk about killing yourself eating all that stuff!

Unstoppable

Well, we can not stop the Plant-Based Food Revolution! It’s here and won’t stop, just look at your supermarket shelves, there are large sections of plant-based foods everywhere, all the advertising on television, hell, even the best restaurant in the world changed the entire menu from meat to Vegan in 2021!  Daniel Humm at 11 Madison Square.   here is a write-up in a Swiss Newspaper about  Chef About Daniel Humm

Aris Guzman

Aris Guzman, born in the Dominican Republic, came to Switzerland as a teenager. Here she completed a cooking apprenticeship and in 2019 became self-employed as a gastro entrepreneur (Soul Food by Aris) with a focus on vegan and Caribbean cuisine. She also runs a micro-bakery in Zurich, Switzerland. Her second book Tasty Treats” has just been published.

Habits, Dependence, and Addictions

We all know that we humans are total habit-forming creatures, we all have our little habits that we are not willing to give up, and most people are perfectly happy with that, I, for example, call myself a “routinist”, most evenings I write down things that I would like to accomplish the next day, sometimes I do, sometimes they don’t get accomplished, if not they just get put on the following day’s list. My wife trained me to make coffee every morning, first thing right, after clicking on the remote to “Good Morning Britain”!

My keys are always in the same place, my shoes are always in the same location, and since I am retired my whole life is a routine! and I like it that way, and that is why it took me a good part of my 73 years to finally crack at least one of those habits that I was addicted to just like most people are, especially being in the food and hospitality business for 55 years plus.

Disgusted and turned off

About a year and a half ago, together with my family, we watched a Netflix documentary called “The Game Changers”, (I mentioned it in a previous blog)  What Is a Plant-Based Diet? Benefits of Going Plant-Based That day we decided to stay off red meat for a while to see if it made a difference, not only was the decision based on health reasons, but also after watching what was going on with our food supplies throughout the world, we were disgusted!

Not 100 % meatless

We are not a hundred percent meatless, but once in a while I do like a good ground beef with rice or mashed potatoes, and when we go to a family dinner it isn’t always meatless, those are the days when we cheat! But I would say 90 % of the time we either eat fish, chicken, or turkey. and a lot of vegetables and beans.

I investigated, researched, and read all I could about healthy diets, healthy foods, vitamins, nutritional info, etc, etc,  (Animal vs. Plant Base Diets) everyone has something better to suggest, the fact is everything you consume from the markets has preservatives of some kind to be able to sit on a shelf or in a refrigerator for several days or weeks.

The Point

Nobody can deny the fact that the world is going in the wrong direction for the future of our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, the mere fact that in another 10-20 years there will be more than 10 billion people on this planet, is astonishing and scary!

Watch Netflix

I urge you to watch this Netflix Documentary if you haven’t seen it yet, I am positive that it will make you at least think twice when you walk through your supermarket the next time.
